The Alaska-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team is made up of medical and non-medical personnel who train in order to respond quickly to natural and man-made disasters.
We are actively looking for new members, both medical and non-medical. A brief list of positions include: nurses, paramedics, doctors, EMT's, administrative clerks, cooks, mechanics, lab technicians, pharmacists, logistics personnel, radio/communications specialists, and others. Our primary mission is medical response during a disaster. The non-medical positions on the team have been carefully chosen to provide support and to maintain and enhance the operation of our field hospital capabilities.
Potential volunteers are encouraged to attend a training meeting and see for yourself if this is something you might be interested in. At our meetings, a DMAT/NDMS 101 class is taught that provides a complete overview of the National Disaster Medical System, how it actually works, and the part that you might play as a volunteer. There is also an opportunity for a team member to answer your specific questions.
There are opportunities for individual members from outside the Anchorage Bowl. We are working on web based training and when enough members are available alternative meetings at other locations. Expectations of Team Members: - Attend monthly meetings - Participate in Field Training Exercises - Be available for work parties held at the warehouse - Join in on community projects - such as the Special Olympics World Winter Games, 2000 Millennium Night of Lights and 4th of July Celebrations.
